The American Bison has had a remarkable story and journey. They went from almost extinct to thriving in many places throughout the US.
This bull bison was photographed just west of Custer State Park in South Dakota. I just left the park on the west side of it driving one of the back roads to get to my next destination. I spotted him. He is a solitaire bull. This means he is on his own, for the most part, until he can either take over a herd from a rival male or establish a herd of his own. You noticed he has a broken horn; he had fought with another male to take over mating rights for a female or a herd. The other thing male bison will do is after mating season, they will go off on their own to recoup from on the energy they used to fight for dominance and mating.
This male has a lot of power in him. They can weigh up to almost 2800 pounds and run at 35 miles an hour. Bison do have a temper on them and when they are upset, they will charge and can destroy things around them without notice.
Bison have a lot of power, yet at the same time they seem to be these big jolly old giants.
What is something that you have witness the power of?
